Inspiration
As educators, we probably share that somewhere in our lives, a teacher had a great influence on us and made us want to be like them. My love for science began at New Milford High School, New Milford, NJ when I was fortunate enough to have two inspiring teachers - Mr. William A. Monroe (chemistry) and Mr. Ted Janner (biology). These teachers made science fun, relevant, and exciting, where students were able to discover and explore.

Educational Background

I attended the University of Connecticut, where I earned a B.A. in Biology and Education. I obtained my Master’s in Public Administration from Rutgers University (Newark), and an Ed.S. in Professional Development and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, Management, and Policy, both from Seton Hall University.

Teaching & Leadership Experience
I taught general science, biology, environmental science, earth science, and physical science in middle and high school before I became a science supervisor. I started with five teachers in my department and later became Jersey City’s K-12 science supervisor, with 40 schools and many teachers to lead. I initiated a district-wide science fair, family science nights, and created a science newsletter that highlighted the achievements of both students and teachers. In between, I was a school principal in several districts, and my schools ranged in grade levels from pre-K to grade 8. I prepared for the principalship by being a high school vice principal for two years.

Academic Contributions
After retiring from K-12 education, I became a professor at Ramapo College of New Jersey, where I taught pre-service teachers how to teach science and mathematics, using an inquiry-based approach. Because time for science is usually limited, I developed expertise in the integration of math and science with language arts using children’s literature.

Professional Development & Presentations
Since 1990, I have been an active presenter of professional development at local, state, national, and international conferences. These include The National Science Teaching Association, The Association for Literacy Educators and Researchers, the NJ School Boards Association, the NJ Science Teachers Association, the Brookdale Community College Math/ Science/ Literacy/ Technology Education Network, the 3rd International Caparica Congress in Antibiotic Resistance in Caparica, Portugal, and the International Consortium for Research in Science and Mathematics Education. In addition, I have presented at local school districts, including, but not limited to, Ringwood, Garfield, Cedar Grove, Montville, Wanaque, Morris Plains, Ridgefield, and Rahway. I was a guest speaker at the Caldwell Public Library and developed an informative session about the 2024 Great American Solar Eclipse.

Passions and Hobbies
When I'm not inspiring minds through my workshops, I indulge in activities that keep me curious and active. You might find me engrossed in a good book, exploring nature on horseback, swimming, tending to my garden, or planning my next travel adventure. I also cherish the time I spend with my grandchildren, sharing stories and exploring the world together.

A highlight of my travels was a STEM Leaders Expedition to Iceland, where I delved into studies on volcanoes, climate change, and renewable energy. I even had the exhilarating experience of climbing a glacier and hiking glacial moraines. These adventures fuel my passion for science and bring a global perspective to my workshops.

David D. Byrne
Adjunct Professor of Physics
At the annual New Jersey Science Convention as well as for the National Science Teaching Association national and regional conferences, I had the opportunity to participate in her presentations at these venues, and was impressed with the practical and easily implemented science lessons she shared. I know that Eva is bringing her high level of enthusiasm and energy, her love of both teaching and science, and her ability to keep abreast of the latest developments in science education to help prepare the teachers of tomorrow.
Thomas P. Walsh
Ed.D. & Professor at Kean University
At the K-12 level, I was always impressed with Dr. Ogens' ability to not only provide professional development for the math and science teachers, but to involve parents in the understanding of science across the districts she served. She has a keen understanding of curriculum and I am positive she shares her insights with students, making her a professional who cannot just discuss science education from a theoretical point of view, but from a realistic and practical way as well.

I just wanted to share an exciting lesson I conducted thanks to your class last semester. Typically, science at my placement is limited to 30-minute worksheets, but today I took my second graders outside to our 'natural playground' for a hands-on engineering challenge. They had to build a shelter with limited materials and adapt it for wind and rain. The students were fully engaged, making connections to the engineering design process naturally. My supervising teacher praised the activity, and the students expressed how much fun they had, with one even saying, "I didn't know science could be fun!" Thank you for teaching me how to make science enjoyable and meaningful!
Susan E. Coletta
Senior Science Education Specialist, Rutgers University Waksman Institute
18 middle school teachers participated in the 2017 MPS Summer Institute led by Dr. Ogens, where they learned about implementing 21st century science connections in their classrooms aligned with NGSS standards. Participants praised Dr. Ogens' teaching style, knowledge, and expertise, reporting that they learned a great deal from the variety of units and activities offered.

After taking Methods with Professor Ogens at Ramapo College, I am not afraid to teach science because I feel that the skills I have acquired through this course has prepared me to be applicable to any challenge. The way Professor Ogens has modeled how a science class should be taught; is how I hope to teach my students.

Dr. Ogens is great! She really cares about us and our learning. She always went out of her way for us.
Dr. Megan A. FIsher

I recommend Dr. Eva Ogens without reservation. Her expertise, guidance, and support helped shape into the educator I am today. I am confident she will continue to shape the future of educators for years to come.
