This workshop was made during the pandemic in an effort to continue to educate students by providing science projects that they can do from the comfort of their homes.
Project Overview
This project provides a detailed explanation of potential energy tailored for 4th-grade students. It covers the fundamental concept of potential energy, using everyday examples to illustrate how objects store energy when at rest and release it when in motion. Through interactive demonstrations, the video aligns with the NGSS standard 4-PS3-1, making it a valuable educational tool for both teachers and students.
Problem
Students often find it challenging to grasp the concept of potential energy and its practical applications.
Challenge
Creating an engaging and comprehensible explanation of potential energy that resonates with young learners and meets educational standards.
Solution
Our project video uses clear explanations, interactive examples, and relatable scenarios to simplify the concept of potential energy, helping students grasp how energy is stored in objects at rest and how it is released in motion. This method not only makes learning fun but also ensures retention and understanding, aiding in better academic performance.

At the annual New Jersey Science Convention as well as for the National Science Teaching Association national and regional conferences, I had the opportunity to participate in her presentations at these venues, and was impressed with the practical and easily implemented science lessons she shared. I know that Eva is bringing her high level of enthusiasm and energy, her love of both teaching and science, and her ability to keep abreast of the latest developments in science education to help prepare the teachers of tomorrow.

At the K-12 level, I was always impressed with Dr. Ogens' ability to not only provide professional development for the math and science teachers, but to involve parents in the understanding of science across the districts she served. She has a keen understanding of curriculum and I am positive she shares her insights with students, making her a professional who cannot just discuss science education from a theoretical point of view, but from a realistic and practical way as well.

I just wanted to share an exciting lesson I conducted thanks to your class last semester. Typically, science at my placement is limited to 30-minute worksheets, but today I took my second graders outside to our 'natural playground' for a hands-on engineering challenge. They had to build a shelter with limited materials and adapt it for wind and rain. The students were fully engaged, making connections to the engineering design process naturally. My supervising teacher praised the activity, and the students expressed how much fun they had, with one even saying, "I didn't know science could be fun!" Thank you for teaching me how to make science enjoyable and meaningful!

18 middle school teachers participated in the 2017 MPS Summer Institute led by Dr. Ogens, where they learned about implementing 21st century science connections in their classrooms aligned with NGSS standards. Participants praised Dr. Ogens' teaching style, knowledge, and expertise, reporting that they learned a great deal from the variety of units and activities offered.

After taking Methods with Professor Ogens at Ramapo College, I am not afraid to teach science because I feel that the skills I have acquired through this course has prepared me to be applicable to any challenge. The way Professor Ogens has modeled how a science class should be taught; is how I hope to teach my students.

Dr. Ogens is great! She really cares about us and our learning. She always went out of her way for us.

I recommend Dr. Eva Ogens without reservation. Her expertise, guidance, and support helped shape into the educator I am today. I am confident she will continue to shape the future of educators for years to come.
