Project Overview
Understand the importance of managing stormwater to prevent flooding and protect the environment. Dr. Eva guides students through creating models and simulations to study stormwater runoff and its impact.
Problem
Flooding and water pollution are significant issues caused by inadequate stormwater management.
Challenge
Create a model to simulate stormwater runoff and test various management techniques to reduce flooding and pollution.

Students will use materials to build models that mimic real-life stormwater systems, experimenting with different methods to manage water flow and quality.

I just wanted to share an exciting lesson I conducted thanks to your class last semester. Typically, science at my placement is limited to 30-minute worksheets, but today I took my second graders outside to our 'natural playground' for a hands-on engineering challenge. They had to build a shelter with limited materials and adapt it for wind and rain. The students were fully engaged, making connections to the engineering design process naturally. My supervising teacher praised the activity, and the students expressed how much fun they had, with one even saying, "I didn't know science could be fun!" Thank you for teaching me how to make science enjoyable and meaningful!

18 middle school teachers participated in the 2017 MPS Summer Institute led by Dr. Ogens, where they learned about implementing 21st century science connections in their classrooms aligned with NGSS standards.
